How to control dengue cases?

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease caused by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Since there is no specific antiviral treatment, prevention and control are the best ways to reduce dengue cases.

1. Prevent Mosquito Breeding 🦟

Aedes mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, so eliminating breeding grounds is crucial.
Remove standing water – Empty containers, flower pots, old tires, and coolers.
Keep water storage tanks covered to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs.
Use larvicides or biological control (like guppy fish) in water bodies.
Clean drains and gutters to avoid water stagnation.

2. Protect Against Mosquito Bites

Since Aedes mosquitoes bite during the day, extra protection is needed.
Use mosquito repellents with DEET, picaridin, or lemon eucalyptus oil.
Wear protective clothing – Full-sleeved shirts, pants, and socks.
Install mosquito nets and screens on windows and doors.
Use indoor insecticides or mosquito coils in dengue-prone areas.

3. Community & Government Initiatives

Fogging & spraying insecticides in high-risk areas.
Public awareness campaigns to educate about dengue prevention.
Encourage community clean-up drives to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
Early detection & reporting of dengue cases to prevent outbreaks.

4. Strengthen Healthcare Response

Early diagnosis through blood tests like NS1 antigen, IgM, and IgG.
Improve hospital facilities for severe dengue cases.
Increase vaccine availability (Dengvaxia is available in some countries).

5. Personal Health & Immunity

Stay hydrated and take paracetamol (avoid aspirin/ibuprofen in dengue).
Boost immunity with a healthy diet, vitamin C, and papaya leaf extract (which some believe may help with platelet count).
Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms like high fever, bleeding, or severe weakness occur.
